Chris,

You can find the VIN on the inside door panel of the driver's door, on the title, and under the hood (near the radiator support bracket).

More:
Other Common locations of the vehicle identification number vary and you might find the VIN here:

    * Firewall of the vehicle
    * Left hand inner wheel arch
    * Steering column
    * Radiator Support Bracket
    * Dash by windshield
    * Drivers door or post or passenger side
    * Guarantee & Maintenance Book *Vehicle documents
    * Machined Pad on front of engine

Bill,
I am traveling in Europe so I don't have time for much of an answer; however you are correct, the 500SL was not introduced until 1980 and when that occurred it was with an alloy block. There were no alloy block V8 Mercedes engines sold by M-B or AMG in 1974, or 1975, or 1976.

There were prototypes under development in the mid-1970s for the first M-B alloy V8 that appeared at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, 1977, as a 500SLC. Only 9 cars were built that year but only in five passenger coupe format.

Prototypes are rarely released to the public. It is likely miss-labeled and the widow (?) doesn't have her facts straight. Or, it is an engine transplant. Move cautiously.

NOTE: For those interested, you can purchase the <a href="http://amgmarket.com/marketsquare/store.php?page1-category-id35.html" rel="nofollow">SL Market Letter</a> from our store.

Bill,
Mercedes-Benz came out with the 500SL in 1980. In 1974 they were selling the 450SL (R107 body style, V8) and the 280SL (Twin Cam Six, 185 HP).

I've found a 1974 500SL AMG and I'm thinking about buying it. I can't find any info on this car. Is it a real AMG? 500SL? Everything that i've found online says that they did not make a 500SL until the 80's. This car is brown but I think it used to be red. I would appreciate any info you could give me on these. Thanks Bill Babekuhl

I am compiling one of our 'road test' books titled - AMG MERCEDES Gold Portfolio 1983-1999. The pics I have of AMGs covering this period are not worthy of the marque - even those supplied by M-B.
We have no budget for a front cover pic but would of course acknowledge anything we use and donate a copy when published - early next year. The pic we need is landscape in shape, in colour, and of course hi-res. Thanks for getting this far. John

Bob,

Here's a forum post <a target="_blank" href="http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r107-sl-slc-class/1210668-110-hardtop-hoist-any-good.html">link concerning the hard-top lifts</a>.
Also, visit the MBCA Forum website:
http://mbca.cartama.net/
(there is a forum section for the SL's)

Another resource is MBCA's Greater Washington Section (assuming your in that area). Several members own SLs and we'll be gathering at the GWS picnic in August at Potomac, MD.
Hope this helps.
