The distinctive AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine with AMG Cylinder Management and direct fuel injection will find exclusive use in the all-new 2012 SLK55 AMG, which will celebrate its world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main in September. This means that the SLK55 AMG will remain the only roadster in its segment with an eight-cylinder engine.

Even with peak output increased by 60 hp to 415 hp and torque increased from 376 lb-ft to 398 lb-ft, the fuel consumption is about 30 percent less which places the new SLK55 AMG among the top performers in its segment.

New naturally aspirated eight-cylinder closely related to the V8 biturbo

In line with its “AMG Performance 2015″ strategy, Mercedes-AMG is meeting its promise to continuously reduce both the fuel consumption and emissions of new models over the next few years with the new V8 motor – while reaching new heights with the central brand value of “Driving Performance.”

The new M152 is based on the AMG M157 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine which first debuted on the 2011MY CL63 AMG and S63 AMG. Numerous components and systems are basically identical, e.g. the displacement, bore/stroke, distance between cylinders, ECO stop/start system and direct injection technology. Distinguishing features versus the M157 include the new intake air ducting, new cylinder heads, the modified valve drive, an adapted oil supply system and an optimized crankcase.

High performance fuel economy and output

“With the new 415 hp AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine we have once again created a real masterpiece. The M152 sets an outstanding example for efficiency, while demonstrating the creativity and expertise of our engineers, who took their inspiration from Formula 1 when developing the cylinder shut-off system. This makes the new, naturally aspirated eight-cylinder the perfect power unit for the new SLK55 AMG, which will celebrate its premiere at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt/Main in the autumn,” says Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

“Thanks to the innovative AMG Cylinder Management system and other high-tech components, our newly developed AMG M152 naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine achieves the fuel economy of a four-cylinder with the muscular power delivery and emotional sound experience of a V8. A sports car engine with technology taken from Formula 1 – I am convinced that the new SLK55 AMG will meet the high expectations of all sports car fans,” says Friedrich Eichler, head of powertrain development at Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Exclusive combination of advanced technologies

The high-tech M152 engine not only stirs emotions with its extraordinary power delivery and torque, but also thanks to a combination of advanced technologies which is unequalled anywhere in the world. No other gasoline engine features direct injection at a pressure of 2,900 psi, spray-guided combustion and piezo-injectors in conjunction with map-controlled cylinder shut-off, an all-aluminum crankcase with “spectacle” honing, four-valve technology with continuous camshaft adjustment, a high compression ratio of 12.6 : 1, an ECO stop/start system and generator management – while revving to a maximum of over 7,000 rpm. All these design features lead to high thermodynamic efficiency, which is the foundation for high fuel efficiency and low exhaust emissions.

AMG Cylinder Management

The AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system, developed completely by Mercedes-AMG, significantly improves efficiency: cylinders two, three, five and eight are cut off under partial load, which considerably lowers fuel consumption. This technology is similar to what’s used in the 750 hp V8 engines used in Formula 1. Since efficiency also plays a major role in this ultimate form of motor racing, two or four of the eight cylinders are cut off when cornering at low speed, during Safety Car laps or for pit stops.

The cylinder shut-off function is available over a wide engine speed range from 800 to 3,600 rpm if the driver has selected transmission mode “C” – Controlled Efficiency. The AMG main menu in the instrument cluster informs the driver whether cylinder shut-off is active, and whether the engine is currently running in four or eight-cylinder mode. No less than 170 lb-ft of torque is still available in four-cylinder mode – enough power to ensure plenty of acceleration in most driving situations. As soon as the driver has a need for more power and leaves the partial load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are activated. The switch from four to eight-cylinder operation is immediate and imperceptible, leading to no loss of occupant comfort whatsoever. At an engine speed of 3,600 rpm the activation process takes no longer than 30 milliseconds.

Valves closed, fuel delivery and ignition deactivated

The cylinder shut-off system is made possible by a sophisticated engine management system, with 16 hydraulic actuators and a complex oil supply system in the cylinder head. The selectable actuators are integrated into the cylinder heads, and keep the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders two, three, five and eight closed. At the same time their fuel supply and ignition are deactivated. This not only enables the load-change losses of the four deactivated cylinders to be reduced, but also increases the efficiency of the four remaining cylinders. This is because the operating point is transferred to the higher load range. The actuators are compact and lightweight, allowing tight valve train operation and engine speeds up to 7,200 rpm.

All-aluminum crankcase with Silitec cylinder liners

The crankcase of the new AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine is made of diecast all-aluminum construction. The low (dry) engine weight of just 412.4 lbs is the result of uncompromising lightweight construction methods. The bearing covers for the main crankshaft bearings are grey cast iron, and are bolted to the crankcase as well as on the sides for high rigidity.

The piston rings are carbon-coated to minimize internal friction and optimize the wearing characteristics. Cast-in Silitec cylinder liners ensure low friction for the eight pistons. “Spectacle” honing is another measure to reduce friction and therefore fuel consumption: in this sophisticated and complex process, the cylinder liners receive their mechanical surface treatment when already bolted in place. As honing would no longer be possible with the cylinder head installed, a jig resembling a pair of spectacles is bolted to the crankcase. The cylinder liners distort as if the cylinder head were in place, and are only then given their mechanical surface treatment. As a result, any static distortion of the cylinder liners caused by tightening the cylinder head bolts can be completely eliminated.

Other measures to optimize efficiency:

weight-optimized cast aluminum pistons with special piston skirt coating

special ventilation holes in the crankcase

oil pump with electrically controlled pressure stage

separate oil pump for cylinder shut-off as a controllable, low-friction vane cell pump

engine cooling on the particularly efficient cross-flow principle

electronically controlled fuel pressure, fully variable and demand-related between 1,450 psi and 2,900 psi.

The forged crankshaft of high-grade 38MnS6BY steel alloy rotates in five main bearings, has eight counterweights and has been optimized with respect to torsional rigidity, inertia, low rotating masses and a long operating life. A two-mass viscous damper mounted at the front reliably eliminates vibrations. Each connecting rod journal on the crankshaft carries two forged, cracked connecting rods.

Four-valve technology with variable camshaft adjustment

Perfect charging of the combustion chambers is ensured by large intake and exhaust valves. The exhaust valves, which are subject to high thermal loads, are hollow and sodium-cooled. Four overhead camshafts operate the 32 valves via low-maintenance, low-friction cam followers. The infinitely variable camshaft adjustment within a range of 40 degrees on the intake and exhaust sides depends on the engine load and engine speed, leading to outstanding output and torque values. This also results in consistent idling at a low speed. Depending on the engine speed, valve overlap can be varied for the best possible fuel/air supply to the combustion chambers and efficient removal of the exhaust gases. The variable camshaft adjustment is carried out hydraulically via four pivoting actuators. These are electromagnetically actuated and controlled by the engine control unit. The camshafts are driven by three high-performance silent chains, which have considerable advantages in noise comfort compared to cylinder roller chains.

Controlled Efficiency stop/start function as standard

The Controlled Efficiency stop/start function further contributes to the low fuel consumption. This system is standard equipment in the new SLK55 AMG, and permanently active in the fuel economy transmission mode “C”. Once the driver brakes to a stop the V8 engine is automatically switched off. Once the brake pedal is released or the accelerator is depressed, the engine is immediately restarted and the car is able to accelerate quickly. Intelligent technology guarantees a comfortable and immediate start-up: a crankshaft sensor recognizes the direction of rotation and registers the resting position of all eight pistons. For an automatic engine start, the cylinder with the most favorable piston position receives an injection of fuel into its combustion chamber. The precise piezo-electric injectors greatly assist this process, as they make particularly fast starts possible. The M152 always starts in eight-cylinder operation.

The sophisticated engine management system ensures that the engine is only switched off if certain conditions are met. The starter battery must have sufficient charge, for example, and the engine must be at the necessary operating temperature for efficient emissions control. The same applies to the interior temperature selected by the driver: if this has not yet been reached, the engine is not switched off when the car comes to a stop. The onboard network management system makes sure that active audio, telephone or video functions are not interrupted by the stop/start function, and that the air conditioning continues to operate.

A framed “ECO” symbol in the AMG main menu shows the driver that the Page 7 Controlled Efficiency stop/start function is active. When cylinder shut-off is active, the driver is notified by the symbol “ECO4″, while “ECO8″ stands for eight-cylinder operation. Should one of the above criteria prevent activation of the system, this is shown in the central display by the message “Stop/start inactive” and an “ECO” symbol with no frame. In the two more performance-oriented driving modes “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual), the stop/start function is always deactivated. If required, the driver can also switch it off while in “C” mode as well. In this case neither a “stop/start” nor an “ECO” symbol appears.

Generator management helps to save fuel

A generator management system makes a further contribution to fuel economy: whenever the V8 engine is in overrun or when braking, kinetic energy is used to charge the battery rather than being wasted as heat in the usual way. In all other operating modes a combination of onboard network and generator management enables the generator to be kept at a low voltage. This reduces the load on the engine as well as fuel consumption when in city traffic with its frequent overrun and braking phases.

Highly efficient engine electronics for every function

All the engine functions are executed and controlled by a particularly efficient Bosch MED 17.7.3. control unit. This state-of-the-art engine computer not only controls the direct fuel injection, cylinder shut-off and variable oil supply, but also communicates with all the other onboard control units. The microprocessor has more than 30,000 different parameters and functions stored in its memory, and is able to perform up to 260 million individual operations per second. To reduce the load on the engine control unit, the eight individual ignition coils have an integral electronic module known as an ignition amplifier at each cylinder. These ensure a strong ignition spark at all engine speeds and under all load conditions. Eight high-voltage powerstages are responsible for highly precise actuation of the piezo-electric injectors.

New AMG sports exhaust system with integrated exhaust flaps

For the first time AMG is using a sports exhaust system featuring an exhaust flap on each side. This technology resolves the age-old conflict of an emotional sound during spirited driving and a more discreet engine note at low speed operation.

Each of the two rear silencers has a flap which is variably activated on a logic-controlled basis depending on the driver’s accelerator input and the engine speed. At low loads and engine speeds below 2,000 rpm the flaps remain closed. This causes the exhaust gases to cover a longer distance and flow through an additional damping element, so that the engine sound is pleasantly subdued and irritating frequencies are effectively suppressed. When the driver accelerates, the flaps open at an angle of 15, then 30 and up to 50 degrees so that some of the exhaust gases cover a shorter distance. This produces a sonorous engine note. Under full load at higher engine speeds, in performance-oriented eight-cylinder operation, both flaps are fully opened so that the occupants are able to enjoy the muscular sound typical of an AMG V8.

The twin-pipe AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes on each side has a diameter of 65 millimeters from the manifolds to the pre-silencer. The diameter is reduced to 60 millimeters from the pre-silencer to the rear silencers.

Effective emissions technology with new catalytic converter boxes

The requirements for the exhaust system of the new, naturally aspirated AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine were complex – low exhaust emissions, compliance with country-specific standards and a characteristic engine sound. The SLK55 AMG meets all the requirements of the US market (LEV-III standard, On-Board Diagnosis II).

Air gap-insulated manifolds ensure a rapid catalytic converter response. For efficiency and to save space, this concept has a tandem catalytic converter housing on each side of the vehicle: adjacent to the firewall, two thin-walled ceramic substrates are grouped into each housing. This solution makes the previous, additional underbody catalytic converters unnecessary. The two ceramic substrates differ to ensure rapid and efficient emissions control: the front one is coated with palladium, while the rear one has a bimetal coating of palladium and rhodium. One lambda sensor per row of cylinders is located in front of each catalytic converter housing, and there is a lambda diagnostic sensor between each of the two thin-walled substrates.

The lambda sensors are necessary for demand-related lambda control. In all operating conditions, the constituents of the intake mixture can be precisely controlled to avoid damaging the catalytic converters. This also benefits the fuel consumption under full load, as the mixture can be leaner than in engines without this control system.

Development of the M152 began in 2008

Development of the new, naturally aspirated AMG M152 5.5-liter V8 engine began in 2008. On the basis of the M157 eight-cylinder biturbo motor, the first drafts were calculated, designed and verified by simulation. Various model and component tests were followed by numerous test series before a concept engine was finalized. The focus was on optimizing the cylinder shut-off function, with the goal of achieving the maximum fuel saving. The spray-guided direct fuel injection exclusively developed by Mercedes-Benz and also used in this new AMG V8 engine made a valuable contribution.

During the conceptual phase for the M152 the AMG engine specialists concerned themselves with fundamental packaging trials, especially concerning the placement of the selectable actuators for the cylinder shut-off function. The design of the intake and exhaust ducts was decisively influenced by the actuators, the aim being to make best possible use of the installation space in the cylinder heads to achieve the maximum output and torque yield. Configuration of the camshaft sections was also a central consideration. The challenge was not only to achieve the desired output and torque figures, but also to create a durable, dynamic valvetrain with the selectable actuators despite the high engine speeds of up to 7,200 rpm.

In addition to extensive simulations of the valve drive system, tests were Page 10 conducted on the cylinder head test bench to assess the dynamic properties of the valve drive before it was used in a finished internal combustion engine.

Perspex cylinder head for research purposes

Further component tests for the AMG Cylinder Management system were carried out using a perspex cylinder head. The AMG developers used this to analyze the complex system of oil supply ducts and selectable compensating elements in a wide range of operating conditions, e.g. when starting or at high engine speeds. This enabled extraneous influences such as air intrusion into the oil circuit to be easily identified for optimization of the system. Only after the component tests was the cylinder shut-off system tested and verified in a complete engine on dynamic simulation test benches.

The M152 presented a further challenge – verifying the performance of an engine which is strictly speaking a combination of two engines: a four-cylinder and an eight-cylinder. During the development process a large number of parameters such as injection quantities, injection times and camshaft adjustment in four and eight-cylinder operation had to be examined. The transition between the two operating modes must only occur when the camshafts are not “biting”, and the selectable actuator is not under load. The behavior of the deactivated cylinders was also continuously analyzed.

High-tech test benches for engines with over 630 hp

The Mercedes-AMG test bench facility houses nine high-tech test benches, allowing dynamic testing of engines with an output exceeding 630 hp and more than 738 lb-ft of torque. These test facilities are able to simulate any road and environmental conditions to reproduce any conceivable type of operation. Cold or hot starting, mountain passes, stop-and-go traffic or fast laps on the North Loop of the Nürburgring – the engines are required to give their utmost. Even the intake air temperatures and densities can be varied by computer control, and the engines can be alternately filled with hot and cold coolant. Fuels of different grades are also available.

Function and endurance bench testing for the highest quality

The goal of the detailed bench tests was to verify the performance of all the engine components, including the accessories. All the measurement data for the engines examined were systematically compared, and evaluated using reproducible test methods. The functioning tests were accompanied by endurance testing: to ensure the very highest quality standards over their entire operating life, the new AMG V8 engines were required to undergo 8,000 hours of endurance testing.

Extensive trials in every climatic zone on earth

At the same time the first test engines had to prove their worth in practical trials. The AMG engineers paid painstaking attention to the cylinder shut-off function, the stop/start system and the exhaust flaps. A wide range of operating conditions was chosen to ensure that the individual functions operate at a high level. Whether in the icy cold of northern Sweden, the merciless heat of Death Valley (USA), lapping the high-speed circuits in Nardo (Italy) and Papenburg or in stop-and-go traffic – the standardized test program of Mercedes-AMG includes all climatic zones and route profiles. At the same time it places the very highest demands on the day-to-day practicality, reliability and long-term durability of the new engine/transmission combination.

The SLK55 AMG test cars were taken on extended stop-and-go journeys in a number of large cities. This enabled the interaction between the different engine and transmission control units to be painstakingly examined, as well as the influence of the ambient temperature on the operating modes of the new V8 engine. Another major focus was on the further development of the control software, and its constant adaptation to the different onboard systems and environmental requirements.

Engine production – tradition of hand-built excellence

Like all other AMG engines, the new, naturally aspirated eight-cylinder is assembled by hand in the AMG engine shop commissioned in 2002. Highly-qualified technicians assemble the M152 according to the “one man, Page 12 one engine” philosophy, maintaining the very strictest quality standards. This painstaking care is attested to by the signature on the characteristic AMG engine plate.

Long tradition of powerful AMG V8 engines

Powerful eight-cylinder engines are an inseparable part of AMG’s corporate history. Established in 1967, the company immediately caused a stir with the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG which succeeded in taking second place at the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) in 1971. The AMG racing sedan was technically based on the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 with the M100 V8 engine. With an engine output of 247 hp at 4,000 rpm and a top speed of 137 mph, this luxury V8 sedan with the M100 V8 engine was Germany’s fastest regular production car at the time. Classic tuning as well as an enlarged displacement from 6,330 to 6,835 cc resulted in an increase in output to 422 hp at 5500 rpm and in torque from 369 to 448 lb-ft.

Another important engine in the AMG story was the M117, its first eight-cylinder unit with four-valve technology. With a displacement of 5.6 liters, 355 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, this V8 accelerated the 300 CE 5.6 AMG to a top speed of 188 mph in 1987. This made the coupé the fastest German car in series production, and American fans reverently christened it “The Hammer”.

The supercharged AMG 5.5-liter V8 of 2001 is another milestone in the history of AMG engine development: the M113 K delivered up to 574 hp and a torque of 590 lb-ft. The supercharged AMG 5.5-liter V8 of the SLR McLaren dating from 2003 was even more powerful – the M155 generated up to 641 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque.

2005 saw the debut of the naturally aspirated, high-revving AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine known as the M156, which developed up to 518 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. In the new C63 AMG Coupé this eight-cylinder in combination with the Performance Package delivered 481 hp. From 2005 to the present more than 68,000 M156 engines have been produced – a record in the history of AMG. Exclusively reserved for the SLS AMG, the M159 likewise has a displacement of 6.3 liters and delivers a peak output of 563 hp, with a maximum torque of 479 lb-ft.

Closely related to the new M152, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine delivers between 518 hp and 563 hp depending on the model, and a maximum torque of between 518 and 664 lb-ft. The M157 is regarded as the most efficient engine in its output and displacement class. The supercharged AMG 5.5-liter V8, the AMG 6.3-liter V8 and the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo were all able to win the Best Performance Engine category several times in the International Engine of the Year Awards.

AMGmarket.com News/Source: Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz sales are once again setting new records: Last month the brand had its best June ever. Worldwide, a total of 120,510 passenger cars (June 2010: 113,297) were delivered to customers, an increase of 6.4 percent compared to the same month last year, when a high sales volume was recorded. We achieved double-digit increases in many markets, our products are in demand, and we succeeded in setting a new record. Our aim is to continue this trend. In the second half of 2011 we want to achieve further growth compared to last year.” In addition to the very popular new C-Class generation, the new M-Class will also be a driver of the positive development. Customers can order the M-Class starting on July 11, the market launch in Western Europe will be in fall. Dr. Schmidt: “We’re on the right track, and this year we have our sights set on achieving an all-time sales record by selling more than 1.3 million Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and smart fortwo.”

The first half of this year was marked by dynamic development and high growth rates, particularly in Asia and the BRIC countries. Sales of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in China rose 52.3 percent to the record-setting level of 92,174 units (Jan.-June 2010: 60,511). Deliveries in June were up 19.1 percent compared to June 2010, with 16,278 units (June 2010: 13,667) sold - yet another new record. Dr. Schmidt: “In China we will begin production of the GLK for the Chinese market later this year. From 2013, we will gradually start with the local production of three of our new compact cars, thus establishing the conditions for continued dynamic growth of Mercedes-Benz in China. We expect to sell 300,000 units there in 2015.”

Good news was also reported in the other Asian markets: In Taiwan (plus 45.0 percent) and South Korea (plus 16.6 percent) Mercedes-Benz surpassed the previous best marks in the first half of the year. This was also the case in India (plus 40.3 percent) and Russia (plus 70.6 percent). Mercedes-Benz sales in Brazil were up 34.7 percent compared to the first half of 2010. In June, Mercedes-Benz achieved the best month of the company’s history in Brazil and Russia.

The brand was also very successful in its second largest market, the U.S. Sales were up 13.0 percent to 20,652 passenger cars in June (June 2010: 18,269). Deliveries to American customers totaled 110,926 units (2010: 103,674) for the first half of the year, an increase of 7.0 percent. In Canada, Mercedes-Benz set a new record for the period of January through June (14,503 units, plus 1.5 percent).

Mercedes-Benz remained the best-selling premium brand in Germany last month. Sales totaled 26,747 vehicles, nearly reaching the high sales volume of June 2010 (26,974). Since the beginning of the year, deliveries have risen slightly to 123,013 units (Jan.- June 2010: 122,458). In Western Europe (without Germany), Mercedes-Benz sold 153.830 passenger cars in the first half of 2011, a slight increase compared to last year (Jan.-June 2010: 152.332) – despite decreases in many of the total markets. There was especially strong demand for Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the U.K. (plus 11.7 percent), Belgium (plus 13.0 percent), and Sweden (plus 20.0 percent).

The new-generation C-Class, the S-Class sedan, and the SUVs were important growth drivers in the first half of the year. Since its introduction, the new generation C-Class sedan has been defending the leading position in its class - and did so once again in June. Sales in the C-Class segment increased 11.4 percent in the first half of the year; in June, they were up 18.7 percent. The C-Class estate, in particular, has recorded high growth since January (plus 38.5 percent). And the new SLK continues to be a strong performer: Sales of the car increased 23.9 percent in June. The S-Class succeeded in defending its position as the best-selling luxury-class sedan - in the month of June and in the first six months of the year, with a sales increase of 18.1 percent to 35,956 units since January. In the SUV segment Mercedes-Benz has set new records every month since the beginning of the year with sales rising by 30.7 percent to 118,629 units. Deliveries of the GLK were up 43.1 percent compared to the same period last year, and sales of the new generation of the R-Class increased by 67.5 percent. Shortly before the market launch of the new M-Class, sales of the vehicle rose another 13.2 percent. Also very popular was the G-Class with an increase of 59.7 percent compared to the first half of 2010. In the E-Class segment, Mercedes-Benz recorded growth of 8.0 percent in the first six months of 2011. Demand was especially strong for the E-Class convertible (plus 80.1 percent). The new CLS also performed very successful during the first six months of this year (plus 155.4 percent).

The facelifted smart fortwo continues to set a dynamic pace. In June the two-seater posted worldwide growth of 7.9 percent, with 10,314 units delivered (June 2010: 9,560). Deliveries to customers worldwide totaled 54,801 units in the first half of the year (Jan.-June 2010: 50,723), an increase of 8.0 percent. In Germany, demand for the smart rose 19.2 percent to 15,729 units, making it number one in its segment in every month from January to June. Sales development was also very positive in France, where smart deliveries increased 11.4 percent in the first six months of 2011. In China the smart continues to write a dynamic success story: Since January, more than four times as many customers chose the two-seater as was the case in the same period last year, 5,493 vehicles were delivered (Jan.-June 2010: 1,204 units).

Mercedes-Benz presents a modular drive concept for electric vehicles: Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZERO. The following is the full press release from Daimler released January 11, 2009.

January 11, 2009: AMG Market | Mercedes-Benz Enthusiasts/Daimler PR/Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz is showing the way ahead in environmentally responsible electromobility by presenting its near-series Concept BlueZERO at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Based on a single vehicle architecture, this intelligent, modular concept allows three models with different drive configurations, all of which are able to meet customer requirements in terms of sustainable mobility:

the BlueZERO E-CELL with battery-electric drive and a range of up to 200 kilometers using electric drive alone

the BlueZERO F-CELL (fuel cell) with a range of well over 400 kilometers using electric drive

the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS with electric drive and additional internal combustion engine as power generator (range extender). This version has an overall range of up to 600 kilometers and can cover a distance of up to 100 kilometers using electric drive alone.

The three BlueZERO variants are based on the unique sandwich-floor architecture which Mercedes-Benz introduced some ten years ago, initially for the A-Class and then for the B-Class, one of the aims being to integrate alternative drive systems. Advantages of the modified construction include the positive effect of the major drive components on the centre of gravity, their space-saving design, and the fact that they are extremely well protected within the vehicle underbody. The five-seater BlueZERO concept cars also set standards in terms of lightweight design, interior layout, and body form.

“The flexible BlueZERO concept allows electromobility for every requirement and highlights the fact that Mercedes-Benz is the world’s only car manufacturer to already have in place all the key technologies for electric cars offering full everyday practicality”, says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The BlueZERO principle: flexible design, compact exterior, and generously sized interior

All three BlueZERO variants share the same key technical components, while the design and vehicle dimensions are identical. Measuring just 4.22 meters in length, the BlueZERO models combine compact exterior dimensions with a generously proportioned and variable interior and luggage compartment. Five fully-fledged seats, a payload of around 450 kilograms, and a luggage compartment capacity of over 500 liters make for outstanding everyday practicality. Thanks to their sandwich construction with a raised sitting position, the cars also offer an exceptionally high level of crash safety for the passengers and the technology, not to mention excellent all-round visibility.

Compared to electric cars based on conventional vehicle platforms and originally only designed for use in combination with internal combustion engines, Concept BlueZERO offers the following conclusive advantages:

Interior space is retained in full. As the energy accumulators/generators are integrated into the spacious sandwich floor, no compromises are necessary with respect to passenger space, luggage capacity, or variability.

The powertrain technology built into the sandwich floor ensures a low centre of gravity and, consequently, extremely reliable and agile handling.

Crash safety is of the extremely high standard associated with Mercedes thanks to the sandwich concept and the housing of major powertrain components between the axles.

As a result, the BlueZERO models are very different to conventionally constructed electric cars, which have the heavy and voluminous storage battery housed in the boot or in the rear-seat area, for example.

Modular design assures flexibility and efficiency

“Our modular system allows different drive configurations for every customer requirement”, says Dr Thomas Weber, the member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The modified sandwich-floor platform provides the perfect basis for a wide model range with electric drive systems. We are also developing a new, additional platform for future compact models with power units based on optimized internal combustion engines. The intelligent networking of both architectures enables us to develop our product portfolio extremely flexibly and efficiently. From 2009, we will be producing the first Mercedes fuel-cell cars on a small scale. Small-scale production of Mercedes-Benz cars with battery-electric drive alone will then commence in 2010. This means we are extremely well equipped for the future.”

All three BlueZERO models feature front-wheel drive, which is typical for this class of car. The Mercedes engineers have put together a modular system comprising several flexibly combinable drive components. These include state-of-the-art liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries with a storage capacity of up to 35 kWh and the compact electric motor with a maximum output of 100 kW (continuous output 70 kW), which develops a peak torque of 320 Nm. All three variants accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 11 seconds. Their top speed is electronically limited to 150 km/h in the interests of optimal range and energy efficiency.

Electric drive systems with a range of 100, 200, and well over 400 kilometers

With a charging capacity of 15 kW, the powerful lithium-ion batteries in the BlueZERO E-CELL and the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS can store enough energy for a range of 50 kilometers within 30 minutes. In terms of purely electrical drive, one or two hours of charging time is needed for a range of 100 and 200 kilometers respectively. The charging times are doubled if the charging capacity is 7 kW, as would be the case in a normal household. Both of these BlueZERO vehicles incorporate an electronic control unit that supports intelligent charging stations and billing systems.

At the rear, the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUShas the same 1.0-litre turbocharged gasoline engine as the smart fortwo as an additional range extender. This compact three-cylinder powerplant has an output of 50 kW at a constant 3500 rpm. If required, it can recharge the 17.5-kWh lithium-ion battery by means of a similarly rated alternator. A range of up to 600 kilometers is possible on a single tank. The purely electrical, locally emission-free range is up to 100 kilometers. The BlueZERO F-CELLwith fuel-cell drive achieves a range of well over 400 kilometers with zero emissions (as per NEDC).

BlueZERO design: both elegant and functional

Leading-edge technology is uniformly and attractively packaged in all three BlueZERO variants. The unique and distinctive Mercedes design idiom displayed by the body highlights the progressive nature of Concept BlueZERO at first glance.

The powerfully elegant front end is dominated by the radiator grille with its centrally located star. The excellent aerodynamics of the BlueZERO are partly due to the closed front apron, whose design means that cooling air intakes are not required. The 20-inch wheels have also been aerodynamically optimized, while low-friction tires are fitted to reduce rolling resistance.

The striking character lines along the flanks lend the BlueZERO an extremely dynamic side line and accentuate its bionic structure inspired by nature. This characteristic feature of the Mercedes-Benz bionic car was adapted and modified for the BlueZERO models. These elements lend the body its dramatic power.

New-quality light production

The compact rear end of the Concept BlueZERO is characterized by tail lights in the shape of a curved “L”. In addition, the Mercedes designers have achieved a new-quality light production: transparent lenses produce a red light curtain which tapers smoothly towards the sides, creating a lightly diffused effect. This effect is repeated, albeit in white this time, by the front headlamps. What’s more, the front lights feature new lens technology and a plexiglass edge to produce “C” shaped daytime driving lights with the help of state-of-the-art LED technology.

Intelligent technology made visible

Translucent surfaces make the normally concealed technology visible. The light-gray tailgate is made completely from lightweight but highly robust Lexan, allowing a view of the aluminum structure that makes up the rigidifying frame, for example. At the same time, this transparent tailgate provides a view of the vehicle interior, making the advantages of the sandwich-floor platform obvious at a glance: for maximum customer benefit, the luggage compartment and passenger area remain fully usable, since there are no technical components that need to be accommodated here.

“It was very important for us to ensure that the guiding Mercedes-Benz principle of ‘Fascination and Responsibility’ was clearly reflected in the design of the Concept BlueZERO”, says Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener. “This is yet another clear statement that environmental awareness and driving pleasure will continue to go together in our vehicles in the future. We want people to realize at first sight that the Concept BlueZERO is definitively not a lesser option.”

The Mercedes-Benz designers have emphasized this aspiration by introducing paint finishes in three new ALU-BEAM colors. Each of the three variants makes its individual mark: the BlueZERO E-CELL is painted in fresh ALU-BEAM yellow, while the BlueZERO F-CELL has ALU-BEAM green paintwork. Confidence-oozing ALU-BEAM orange was chosen for the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS.

Long version

Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZERO: three-fold proof of the everyday practicality of zero-emission vehicles

Current challenges such as growing worldwide mobility requirements, declining crude oil reserves, and increasingly stringent exhaust emission regulations are making the electric car more and more a focus of public attention. Thanks above all to major advances in battery technology, electric drive is seen as a promising answer to the question of how individual mobility can be made sustainable.

Battery-electric drive systems offer a wealth of advantages in this respect: they provide a high level of torque, are compact and quiet, run extremely efficiently and with zero local emissions, and they operate without the need for fossil fuels. However, it is not currently possible to fulfill all mobility requirements with a single electric vehicle concept. Those who drive predominantly or even exclusively in urban areas do not place as much emphasis on vehicle range but very much like the idea of lower noise levels and emissions. For such customers, a battery-electric vehicle is an attractive solution.

Those who also wish to cover long distances on country roads and motorways combined with low noise levels, no local emissions, and short refueling times have a viable alternative in the shape of the fuel-cell electric vehicle. This technology clearly shows the way ahead in terms of sustainable mobility after the “crude oil age” but requires a hydrogen-fuel-supply infrastructure. The beneficial combination of maximum range, fast energy storage on board from an existing infrastructure, and noiseless and locally emission-free mobility in urban areas is offered by a battery vehicle with range extender.

Concept BlueZERO: modularity assures optimal everyday practicality

The sandwich-floor architecture and the modular design allow three different drive configurations that are able to meet an extremely wide range of different requirements. Measuring 4.22 meters in length, 1.89 meters in width and 1.59 meters in height, the extremely compact BlueZERO concept offers decisive design advantages over electric cars based on conventional vehicle platforms and designed only for use in combination with internal combustion engines.

Interior space is retained in full. As the energy accumulators/generators are integrated into the spacious sandwich floor, no compromises are necessary with respect to passenger space, luggage capacity, or variability.

The powertrain technology located in the sandwich floor and integrated directly at the front axle assures a low centre of gravity and, consequently, extremely reliable and agile handling.

Crash safety is of the extremely high standard associated with Mercedes thanks partly to the housing of the powertrain components between the axles.

Furthermore, all three BlueZERO electric cars are highly suitable for electromobility in urban areas on account of their compact dimensions, easy entry and exit, raised sitting position, and optimal all-round visibility. All of which makes Mercedes-Benz the first and, to date, only car manufacturer in the world to offer three optimal solutions that meet all customer electromobility requirements.

Intelligent sandwich platform assures the highest possible level of safety

Featuring a modified version of the sandwich-floor platform, the BlueZERO concept sets standards for the electric car sector in all areas relevant to day-to-day motoring. The best possible crash safety is assured, since almost all of the drive components are housed within the sandwich floor, that is to say in the protected area between the axles.

Typically for this class of car, all three versions of the Concept BlueZERO are front-wheel drive models with an electric motor at the front axle. The batteries are located in the center of the vehicle floor behind this, in a position which protects against intrusion in the event of a frontal or rear impact, since the energy accumulators are located outside of the body’s impact and deformation zones. Furthermore, the extremely robust construction of the sandwich floor can offer a high level of protection for both the battery and the occupants, even in the event of a side collision. This advantage is also of economic benefit, since the battery is the largest cost factor in electric drive systems. Consequently, if the battery remains undamaged in an accident, the follow-up costs are reduced considerably. By virtue of its proven nutshell effect, the sandwich floor is the safest place for housing the still relatively expensive energy accumulators.

Room for five occupants and luggage thanks to highly efficient use of space

This clever sandwich construction also has obvious advantages where packaging is concerned: locating the drive modules in an underfloor position makes it possible to retain all of the passenger and luggage space in this 4.22-meter long five-seater, with no restrictions whatsoever. In the purely battery-powered BlueZERO E-CELL, for example, up to two of the lithium-ion battery packs developed by Mercedes-Benz can be accommodated in the sandwich floor.

In addition to exemplary safety and unrestricted everyday practicality, the BlueZERO models have further strengths that are by no means the norm for electric cars, namely agility and driving enjoyment. This is in large measure due to the low centre of gravity, another benefit of the low installed position within the sandwich floor, and the front axle suspension. In combination with uncompromising attention to centered masses, this results in outstanding roadholding and handling agility.

Modular drive concept for individually configured electric vehicles

Mercedes-Benz will present two BlueZERO variants at the 2009 NAIAS show in Detroit: the BlueZERO E-CELL as a purely battery-powered vehicle and the fuel-cell version, the BlueZERO F-CELL – both of which are emission-free in local operation. Mercedes-Benz development engineers are also working on a third version with a range extender, the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS. This is additionally equipped with a compact internal combustion engine as a generator that produces power during a journey.

All these models feature battery packs based on the latest lithium-ion technology. This new battery technology has decisive advantages over conventional battery types, among them very compact dimensions, significantly higher performance, excellent reliability, and a long operating life. The identical components used in the modular system also include the compact, permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor, which operates at a maximum of 13,280 rpm. It develops a peak output of 100 kW and a continuous output of 70 kW. Its peak torque is 320 Nm, while the continuous torque is 180 Nm. The maximum torque is available from the first revolution of the electric motor and exceeds the figure achieved by a current V6 gasoline engine at 2500 rpm.

BlueZERO E-CELL: agile, quiet and locally emission-free

The BlueZERO E-CELL is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 35 kilowatt hours (kWh). The liquid-cooled high-voltage cells have an operating voltage of 240 to 426 V. With this battery, the BlueZERO E-CELL has an operating range of up to 200 kilometers. Recharging the empty battery takes three to four hours. The BlueZERO E-CELL accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in less than eleven seconds and, in the interests of optimal range and energy efficiency, has an electronically limited top speed of 150 km/h.

BlueZERO F-CELL: emission-free driving on long journeys with the fuel cell

The new-generation fuel cell used in the BlueZERO F-CELL is more compact and – with a maximum output of 90 kW (continuous output 80 kW) – also more powerful than its predecessor. It can be cold-started at temperatures down to minus 25 degrees Celsius and also has the benefit of short refueling times.

On the road, the BlueZERO F-CELL assures a high standard of dynamic handling, yet this family-friendly compact car consumes just 2.9 liters of fuel (diesel equivalent) per 100 kilometers. According to the NEDC, the BlueZERO F-CELL
is able to cover well over 400 kilometers on one tank of hydrogen.

In the fuel cell version of the BlueZERO, the electric motor, high-voltage battery, and hydrogen tank are likewise positioned beneath the passenger cell to save space. The system uses the most efficient energy source for the current driving situation. When parking or maneuvering at slow speed, for example, the electric motor uses only battery power. When accelerating, energy is provided by both the fuel cell and the battery. When braking, the electric motor acts as a generator and charges the battery. This efficient system therefore makes use of the energy that would be converted into heat during conventional braking and stores it in the powerful lithium-ion battery.

For longer journeys too, Mercedes-Benz sees the fuel cell as one of the key technologies for zero-emission driving. Providing a suitable network of hydrogen filling stations is in place, this technology offers ideal possibilities for sustainable mobility well into the future. The hydrogen-powered fuel cell combines zero emissions with a long operating range, since electrical power is generated on board during the journey. There are no exhaust emissions whatever, and no CO2 is emitted either. The BlueZERO F-CELL emits nothing more than steam. Moreover, a fuel cell drive system is almost twice as efficient as an internal combustion engine.

BlueZERO with range extender: flexible solution with a long range

In the third version, the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS, the Mercedes engineers combine the electric drive system from the purely battery driven BlueZERO E‑CELL with an additional internal combustion engine that serves as a range extender. The compact 50-kW three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine from the smart fortwo charges the battery whilst the car is being driven.

Advantage of the range extender: as with conventionally powered cars equipped with a gasoline or diesel engine, the customer benefits from a significantly longer range (up to 600 km), especially as the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS can also be quickly and easily refueled at any normal filling station. The customer can therefore be sure that the car is available for use anywhere and at any time. And when an urban area is reached after an overland journey, the driver can continue on their way under electric power alone.

The BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS therefore allows electric mobility at the touch of a button, a particular benefit in densely populated urban areas with environmental zones, toll charges, and other access restrictions affecting cars with internal combustion engines.

The BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS with the range extender clearly highlights the advantages of the sandwich-floor platform: here too, the key drive components are integrated in the underfloor area to save space. The internal combustion engine is installed near the rear axle, in the spare wheel well. Thanks to the range extender, the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS has a range of up to 600 kilometers, of which 100 kilometers are in locally emission-free electric mode, with no drop in performance. The NEDC fuel consumption is 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers. In conjunction with a plug-in battery and the resulting CO2 bonus, the car emits just 32 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

In addition, the highly efficient modular concept allows further variants to be individually configured. If the system is designed appropriately, the internal combustion engine used as a range extender can also be employed temporarily as a direct drive unit – when driving on country roads, for example. This setup leaves the full battery capacity available for driving in town. Other conceivable variants might be to use the fuel cell as a range extender, or a combination of the fuel cell and plug-in batteries. Thanks to this versatility, the Mercedes-Benz modular electric drive concept is able to cover every conceivable option for electric driving.

Instead of a fuel filler cap, the car features plug-in connectors to EU and US standards for rapid recharging with electrical power. One contact is intended for conventional power cables that fit any household power socket. The second is suitable for connection to public recharging stations.

BlueZERO design: both elegant and functional

Cutting-edge technology is very attractively packaged in all the BlueZERO variants. The future-oriented yet unmistakable Mercedes-style body contours accentuate the progressive nature of the Concept BlueZERO at first glance.

Striking design idiom with bionic structures

The striking character lines along the flanks give this compact concept car a very dynamic side line and accentuate its bionic structure. This characteristic feature of the Mercedes-Benz bionic car was adapted and modified for the Concept BlueZERO. These elements lend the body design its dramatic power.

The lower line emerges from the flank in the front doors at the height of the wheel hub, then rises gently to turn steeply upwards and harmoniously continue the body line to the tail lights. This has the effect of stretching the body in visual terms, while suggesting dynamic forward movement despite the comfortable vehicle height. The precisely placed edges break the light to striking effect and lend the BlueZERO a masculine character that is a hallmark of the new Mercedes-Benz design idiom.

Translucent surfaces make the normally concealed technology visible. The light-gray tailgate is made completely from lightweight but highly robust Lexan, allowing a view of the aluminum structure that makes up the rigidifying frame, for example. At the same time, this transparent tailgate provides a view of the vehicle interior, making the advantages of the sandwich-floor platform obvious at a glance: the luggage compartment and passenger area remain fully usable, since there are no technical components that need to be accommodated here.

Key features at the distinctive rear end of the BlueZERO models include tail lights in the form of a curved “L”, whose flame-like shape add a futuristic touch. In addition, the Mercedes designers have achieved a new-quality light production: four transparent lenses produce a red light curtain which tapers smoothly towards the sides, creating a lightly diffused effect.

This effect is repeated, albeit in white this time, by the front headlamps. What’s more, the front lights feature new lens technology and a plexiglass edge to produce “C” shaped daytime driving lights with the help of state-of-the-art LED technology. The extremely energy-efficient LED technology offers the same brightness but requires ninety percent less power than conventional lights.
The lenses are held by supports which also serve as direction indicators.

Aerodynamic design with eye-catching effects

The radiator grille with its centrally located star and even more pronounced V‑shape is a striking reinterpretation of the world-famous Mercedes-Benz radiator grille. The excellent aerodynamics of the BlueZERO are partly due to the closed front apron, whose design dispenses with any cooling air intakes. The 20-inch wheels are also aerodynamically optimized. Low-friction tires are fitted to reduce rolling resistance.

Like many other design features, the wheel covers are transparent and allow a view of wheel spokes, which are visually enhanced with three-dimensional light effects. All BlueZERO variants are also equipped with a semi-transparent, lightweight panoramic roof into which solar panels have been integrated. The thin-layer cells used here allow 20 percent of the light into the interior. Given enough sunlight, they generate sufficient electric power to charge cell phones or mobile MP3-players, for example.

Progressive interior design

The interior features an all-new, progressive design idiom: the lines are curved and blend in subtly with the organic surfaces. The Concept BlueZERO is a logical continuation of the bionic design line and is similar to the Mercedes-Benz bionic car. A wealth of structures inspired by nature and modeled based on organic growth can be found in several of the paneling components: in the door stowage areas, the cockpit, the centre console, the load compartment, and the load sill guard.

The array of colored transparent surfaces lends the interior a feeling of lightness. This is enhanced by semi-transparent surfaces whose edges form striking light breaks. This interplay between transparency and edge emphasis contrasts extremely well with the soft design idiom. The suggested fluorescent conductor paths in the center console represent the advent of a future drive technology.

The sporty front seats feature seemingly inserted upholstery and dynamically shaped backrests. The overall impression is one of lightness and litheness, all
of which makes the vehicle interior feel much more open. As a five-seater, the Concept BlueZERO offers the flexibility and functionality of a modern-day compact car.

The material concept is largely based on a tone-in-tone composition enriched by touches of color. By way of example, the belt color and the seam thread in the paneling components establish a link with the car’s exterior, while the leather strip in the seats creates a visual link with the high-quality steering wheel.

Thanks to their surface quality, the materials are highly resistant. The material mix of textiles and plastics combines a high level of value with high-tech appeal.

Concept BlueZERO: a blueprint for efficient electromobility

With the BlueZERO concept studies, Mercedes-Benz provides a very specific outlook on the immediate future of electric motoring. Major components of this modular drive concept will shortly be used in standard-production cars made by Mercedes-Benz. These include the fuel cell drive system, which will enter small-scale production in 2009. In 2010, the first Mercedes-Benz electric car will also be introduced into small-scale production.

Modular design as a strategic guideline

With this intelligently conceived modular system, Mercedes-Benz will also be able to realize tailor-made drive configurations for individual requirements in the electric car sector. For the brand’s clients, this means a wide choice of purpose-made, efficient, and affordable solutions.

The product implementation presented by Mercedes-Benz on its “Road to the Future” is uncompromisingly wedded to the modular design principle: modular drive technologies that can be used individually or in combination depending on vehicle class, operating profile, and customer requirements are a key factor in this.

Modular drive concept also for hybrid vehicles

This particularly applies to hybrid models such as the S 400 BlueHYBRID, which is due to be launched in 2009 as the most economical gasoline-powered luxury saloon and CO2 champion in its class. For its hybrid models with gasoline and diesel engines, Mercedes-Benz has developed a modular system which can be expanded with respect to performance and range of applications.

In the S 400 BlueHYBRID, the hybrid module with its start-stop function, recuperation and boost effect already makes considerable savings possible.

With a suitable configuration, it is also possible to drive under electric power alone with this hybrid module, while the operating range in electric mode depends on the battery capacity.

The plug-in hybrid represents a further step, where the battery can also be charged from the mains in order to increase the electric operating range.

Intelligent drive mix for sustainable mobility

In the view of Mercedes-Benz, there will be no single technology as the ideal solution for sustainable mobility in the future. Instead the company is responding to the varied requirements with equally versatile solutions. The respective advantages of the individual technologies in terms of optimal fuel consumption and emission values are applied in specific application areas. Mercedes-Benz is basing its strategic planning for the future of individual mobility on the following mix of drive systems:

For long-distance operations, sophisticated internal combustion engines with or without a hybrid module will be used, as well as fuel cell powered vehicles.

For rural operations, plug-in hybrids will increasingly be added to the mix.

For urban operations, locally emission-free vehicle concepts with battery and fuel-cell drive systems are considered to be the most suitable.

The electric drive configuration presented in the Concept BlueZERO does full justice to this requirement profile. Mercedes-Benz has conducted intensive research in the field of fuel cell technology since as early as 1991 and, therefore, has enormous experience with electro- mobility. The brand has the world’s largest fleet of fuel cell powered vehicles undergoing client trials, for example.

And in the field of battery-powered vehicles, the company has also gained unrivalled experience from fleet trials involving 100 smart electric drive cars in London. The Concept BlueZERO impressively reflects this in-depth know-how.

Some 40 percent of all customers select a diesel-powered vehicle.

In 2007 innovative BlueTEC diesel technology was launched for the first time in a passenger car in Europe – in the E 300 BlueTEC. This European introduction was preceded by the launch of the E320 BlueTEC in the U.S. in October 2006. With BlueTEC, Mercedes-Benz has succeeded in greatly reducing emissions and ensuring compliance with the EU5 emission standard. Innovative BlueTEC technology has thus made the diesel engine one of the cleanest and most efficient drive systems in the world.

The “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative of the German federal government and German industry presented Mercedes-Benz with an award in January 2008 for innovative research in connection with the brand’s introduction of BlueTEC technology to Europe. In addition, the E 320 BlueTEC was chosen “2007 World Green Car” by automotive journalists from 22 countries in April of last year. The current E-Class model series has received numerous other awards since its market launch in 2002, including an award for Best Car in the Upper Mid-Range Segment from Auto Motor und Sport magazine.

In the fall of 2006, the E-Class also clearly demonstrated its typical Mercedes brand attributes of exemplary safety, comfort, and economy during the longest long-distance diesel endurance test in automobile history: 36 E-Class cars went on a transcontinental marathon, with each vehicle driven approximately 14,000 kilometers from Paris to Beijing over 26 days. In this endurance test under extreme conditions, Mercedes-Benz once again demonstrated the top performance of its ultramodern diesel engines in terms of emissions, fuel economy, and reliability.

"With the launch of the SLK in 1996, Mercedes-Benz successfully established the premium segment for compact roadsters.
In Western Europe, by far the most important sales market for the SLK, the two-seater was once again the market leader for its segment in 2007. The compact roadster enjoys the greatest popularity in Germany, with over one-third of all SLK drivers coming from the home market of the brand with the star. The rest of Western Europe accounts for a further one-third of sales. Moreover, one in every five SLK customers comes from the U.S. The most popular model among customers is the SLK 200, which is selected by half of all SLK owners worldwide and by more than two-thirds in Germany. Also in strong demand is the SLK 280, which is driven by over one-quarter of all SLK owners.

The new-generation SLK, which celebrated its world premiere at the Detroit Motor Show in January, inspires imagination especially with its sportier looks and the promise of an even more emotional driving experience. The most important changes in the vehicle’s appearance include redesigned front and back views, as well as a carefully modified interior, featuring a new combination instrument panel and a three-spoke steering wheel. Three enhanced engines underscore the two-seater’s dynamic character. Engineers have devoted particular attention to the V6 sports engine. Despite a considerable increase in power in some instances, all the engines use significantly less fuel. For example, the SLK 350 with manual transmission consumes 1.1 liters per 100 kilometers less than its predecessor, despite an added 33 horsepower, for a new total of 305 horsepower.

If desired, the SLK is also available with the newly developed direct-steer system and new-generation audio and telematics features. Like its predecessor, the latest SLK is manufactured in the Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant, the brand’s center of excellence for its open-top vehicles.
