Sorry Dan. Didn’t realize you haven’t opened the door at all yet. Go to a locksmith shop or stop by a tow truck shop. They’ll have the tools to get the door open.

Dan,

I emailed you a document showing the interior of the door. You might want to remove the panel and check the operation of the latch and linkage; make sure nothing is binding. If this doesn’t’ help let me know and I’ll see what else I can find for you.

Let me know what you find. I have a 1972 350/450 SL and my passenger door is starting to stick also. Thanks!

I just purchased a 1974 450SL and I'd like to pick someone's brain about how to get the drivers door open. Both handles seem to link to the latch but no release action. The door will not lock with key or inside lever.

Hello! I found on your fine site the statement that the method of adjusting one's car's side mirrors outward, to eliminate the "blind spot," was "...developed by engineer George Platter. He presented his method at a recent meeting of the Society of Automobile Engineers." I don't know what "recent" means, there, but in fact I first read of this method in 2001, in a 1998 book called Drive to Survive, by a former race-car driver named Curt Rich.

Juan,

Great question. The answer is part personal preference and part financial return on your investment. Convertibles always seem to do better as investments, but if you like sedans by all means get one for yourself.

My recommendation would be to invest in a few books and newsletters before making your purchase. Consider reading John Olson's book, the SL Experience and/or his SL newsletters.

His newsletter covers the trends in pricing for SLs and he provides car buying advice for those buying and selling SLs.

Concerning the 1974 SL: I have a 1972 350/450 SL, which has fewer pollution control devices, nicer European style bumpers, and it is the first year for the 107 body style. Some like the rarer 4-speed European model SLs (value of these vehicles continue to increase). John's book provides a break-down of the cars to buy and why.

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please leave another comment on the blog. Let me know how it goes.

I am starting to think in owning a vintage MB. From what I ahve read, if I can find a Pagoda 250 I will be the envy of many collectors. However this is like wining the lotto. Thus I decided to look for a 450 SLC and I have found one of 1974, and simultaneously I also found a 250 sedan from 1969. The first thing I would like to know from you is for which model you would go if you were in my position and why? Assuming that both cars are in a reasonable condition.

Thanks oin advance,
JL
